During construction work in 1922, a spectacular discovery was made in Merishausen: a vessel containing more than a thousand silver and gold coins, buried around the year 1554. Most of the coins originated from southern-German cities, but some also came from Austria, France, Italy, and other countries. They provide valuable insights into the circulation of money in southern Germany at the beginning of the 16th century. But how did the coins end up in Merishausen? To whom did this money belong? How much was it worth? And why was it buried? This showcase exhibition takes a closer look at the coins and places the find in its historical context with additional objects.
